Spotlight: Caan Segeren Doherty
In this series we are sharing some of the wonderful photographers who make up the NineDots Community. Finding out what makes them tick and the what, why and how behind some of the work they are most proud of. Today Surrey & West Sussex Wedding Photographer Caan shares her favourite 3 images and why she loves them so much.
WHY WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHY?
Being able to freeze moments in time that are meaningful to my clients is why I love wedding photography – even if the importance of that moment is only understood years after the image has been taken. Especially in those instances – and there have been a few over the years – where all that is left are the images of them with a special loved one.
To then use the images to create the story of their day, is something I consider to be extremely rewarding because I know that when they will go through their images, they will not only see all of the moments again, but more than anything, they will feel them again. And that’s for me the ultimate satisfaction of the job: knowing that I’ve been able to create a tangible memory for them that will enable them to relive the day and cherish it for a lifetime.
Caan’s Spotlight photos
This was a moment in time that no-one, especially not the bride and her mum – thought was actually going to happen. Bride & groom got married abroad a few months earlier but Mum could not attend because she was too ill. To celebrate her unexpected recovery from the horrible illness they all thought was irreversible, a big celebration of love was organised last summer and I was fortunate enough to capture it. I hope this image will hold a special place in both their hearts because of the fact that only months earlier the bride had lost all hope of her mum ever walking her down the aisle on her wedding day.

Kids at weddings make for some great material when telling the story of the day and this is one of those moments. I love how the flower girl just could not resist touching the bride’s hair, moments after she was – of course – told not to. I hope this image will bring the bride back to that morning, filled with excitement, anticipation and maybe even a bit of tension, only to then bring a smile on her face, triggered by that naughty little gesture.
This is another favourite image from this year’s wedding season because it perfectly summarises what I stand for and the ideal clients that come with it. Love is love, no matter what size, shape or colour it comes in and I feel incredibly privileged to have clients that entrust me to capture that for them. Especially while we are all having fun at the same time!
WHY NINE DOTS?
After moving from the Netherlands to the UK in 2017, I was looking to connect to fellow wedding photographers and the only person I knew in the UK, my friend Louise Adby (an amazing wedding photographer!) recommended the Nine Dots community. I signed up, went to my first gathering that year and have been a member ever since. From the moment I walked through the door and got a big bear-hug from Mick, all the anxiety I had felt for going there on my own, not knowing anyone, etc. just vanished instantly. Not only is it a great bunch of people, ND membership has given me access to a world of education and inspiration that I had only dreamt of until then.
