NineDots Award Honorary Mentions – by Anna Ambrosi // June 2018
We are super grateful that one of this year’s Gathering speakers, the fantastic Anna Ambrosi was our guest judge for the latest round of NineDots awards. We are proud to present her Honorary Mentions here – and below is some insight into her choices and thought process.
“Sometimes we are in the right place in the right moment. Sometimes people in front of us are too beautiful/cute/funny and we just have to press the shutter. Sometimes something amazing is happening, no matter how we shoot it. Sometimes people are available to be posed and stand long exposure/bright flash or weird lighting props/any experiment whatsoever. Sometimes they are even happy to climb mountains in their wedding dress and be beaten by the strong wind, or to go and collect mud on the seashore.
But sometimes just regular things happen and we have to make the difference between a shot that’s good, and one that could actually last forever. We have to work with what we have, edit it on camera even before shooting and really think about how to get something beautiful and lasting out of it. This is what I tried to award with my selection: the photographer eye, mind and heart, not the situation, the subjects or the creativity per se. Pictures that have been thought-out but not posed, successful but not (or not just) lucky, clean but not organised, fascinating but not excessive, spontaneous but not caricatural.
Thanks so much Anna!
Thanks to everyone who entered and congratulations to all this month’s winners and these Honorary Mentions below. Each month the top 5 photographers of that round win a selection of fantastic prizes provided by some of our partner companies.
